Medication Monitoring

McKinley Care Assisted Living provides a safe environment for residents with complex medication needs.

Older adults and those with specific disabilities may need assistance in obtaining, understanding, and taking medications. There are several reasons for this, including age-related changes in how one’s body processes drugs, managing many medical conditions at one time, memory loss, or difficulty reading or understanding instructions for taking medicines. It can be a full-time job keeping track of medication types, dosages, and times of day they must be administered, so an assisted living facility can prove helpful in maintaining a consistent and safe routine.

In Alaska, assisted living communities are licensed to help people manage their medications, including:

  • Reminding a resident to take their medication

  • Read labels of over-the-counter and/or prescription medicines

  • Open a medication container

  • Observe a resident taking their medications

  • Check a self-administered medication dosage against the medication label

  • Reassure residents that the dosage is correct

  • Direct or guide the hand of a resident, if the resident requests it

It is important to note that Alaska assisted living regulations do not allow McKinley Care staff to actively administer medications to residents. Each person, according to their care plan, will have specific instructions for assisting, reminding, or observing that person when medication is taken at the appropriate time.

Personalized Care

Specialized attention for challenging conditions: Where others say “No,” we say “Welcome!”

Assessment of needs and developing a plan of care

Before an individual moves into McKinley Care Assisted Living, care needs will be assessed to determine how much or how little assistance is needed. If you have a care coordinator, that person will communicate with staff directly regarding your care. You and/or family members should also ask questions and share all information that might be important for care.

Another phrase often used is ‘Activities of Daily Living’ or ADLs. This simply means the activities one conducts every day, like getting dressed or undressed, taking a shower, making healthy meals, or taking medications in the right dosages and on time.

No two residents have the same needs, and that’s why the care assessment is so important. This assessment will be done every 90 days throughout a person’s time at McKinley Care Assisted Living, and it’s key to ensuring each person has the right care at the right time for them.

Once the assessment is completed and accepted by the resident, their family member or care coordinator, and McKinley Care staff, it is signed, dated, and placed in the resident’s chart. Now called a ‘care plan’, a copy is made for each resident or their representative, and one is placed in the resident’s chart for daily use by staff.

Dining Services

Tasty meals, snacks, and companionship in our comfortable dining room

The McKinley Care culinary team takes great pride in creating delicious, healthy meals for residents. Three meals plus snacks are available each day, either in our spacious dining room or delivered to individual resident rooms.

Each month, a menu will be published and distributed to residents, and every effort will be made to accommodate special dietary needs and preferences. Should you have a request or special occasion, please connect with the dietary services team.

Activities

While McKinley Care doesn’t have an activities department, the facility does work closely with local adult day programs in Anchorage. These programs provide activities, special programs, shopping, and one-to-one services according to individual needs.
